what’s it like designing
for a magazine?
Over the past five+ years, I’ve closed more than 75 magazine issues under Cultured and its sister publications (😳). Recently, I’ve started designing with ARTnews and Art in America magazine. I’ve managed photographers, stylists, and luxury advertisers for print. I’ve designed front-of-book pages, full-length features, and cover lines. I’ve paginated advertising placement; color-corrected and retouched images; and managed post-production needs with Cultured’s designated Printer.
My experience doesn’t end on the page: through marketing, design, and branding practices, I’ve helped grow Cultured’s Instagram following from 68k at the start of my tenure to currently over 250k followers. I’ve developed new skills in email marketing, specifically creating a template on email applications such as Mailchimp for non-designers to navigate. During my time with the magazine, I’ve also helped execute cover shoots and manage full-team photoshoots for prominent creatives like Mary J. Blige and Janelle Monae. Many such sessions have taken place during the pandemic, necessitating the utmost coordination and organization.
Off the record
I’ve recently enjoyed discovering Wong Kar-Wai films, designing theoretical iconography for Jimmy Butler’s Big Face Coffee endeavor, and in the last few weeks embroidering the Bada Bing logo from The Sopranos onto an old t-shirt. If I’m not watching the Miami Heat or obsessing over Christopher Moltisanti’s eyebrows, you’ll probably catch me enjoying all my favorite forms of low-brow, but incredibly life-affirming, art.
an exercise in fun: big face coffee
Jimmy Butler’s 2020 NBA playoff run brought me much inspiration. Combined with my love for coffee, the Miami Heat, and Jimmy Butler himself, I found herself wanting to imagine what Big Face Coffee would look like to me. All designs are entirely for fun and have not been associated with Jimmy Butler’s Big Face Coffee (yet).
